She came of age in the 40’s – an authentic “Rosie the Riviter” – she was fiesty & independent – a sharp dresser with long flowing auburn waves – she met my dad at a USO and man, could those two dance!! – stacks of letters from overseas marked their courtship – she left everything she knew in Baltimore for an exciting new life on the west coast – she was a devoted wife and a doting mother – she had me late in life – she could be bossy & impossible – she had to have jokes explained & a clean house was a priority – menopause ravaged her – medicated with valium, her joy & brightness slowly dimmed – she slipped away long before she was actually gone.
I never doubted how much she loved me – she gave me my fiesty and guilt about my dirty house – I wish I had her fashion sense – I never learned to follow, but I would give anything to twirl on a dance floor like her & Dad – I moved 3000 miles away from everything I knew for an exciting life in the southeast – I had my son in my 20s and wished for her patience – I now endure hot flashes and refuse medication. She’s been gone now more than 25 years – I still think of her often – if life could offer any do-overs I’d wish that I could have been a better friend to her……
